چکیده

Two-dimensional almost-Riemannian structures are generalized Riemannian structures on surfaces for which a local orthonormal frame is given by a Lie bracket generating pair of vector fields that can become collinear. Generically, there are three types of points: Riemannian points where the two vector fields are linearly independent, Grushin points where the two vector fields are collinear but their Lie bracket is not, and tangency points where the two vector fields and their Lie bracket are collinear and the missing direction is obtained with one more bracket. In this paper we consider the problem of finding normal forms and functional invariants at each type of point. We also require that functional invariants are “complete” in the sense that they permit to recognize locally isometric structures. The problem happens to be equivalent to the one of finding a smooth canonical parameterized curve passing through the point and being transversal to the distribution. For Riemannian points such that the gradient of the Gaussian curvature K is different from zero, we use the level set of K as support of the parameterized curve. For Riemannian points such that the gradient of the curvature vanishes (and under additional generic conditions), we use a curve which is found by looking for crests and valleys of the curvature. For Grushin points we use the set where the vector fields are parallel. Tangency points are the most complicated to deal with. The cut locus from the tangency point is not a good candidate as canonical parameterized curve since it is known to be nonsmooth. Thus, we analyse the cut locus from the singular set and we prove that it is not smooth either. A good candidate appears to be a curve which is found by looking for crests and valleys of the Gaussian curvature. We prove that the support of such a curve is uniquely determined and has a canonical parametrization. ∗This research has been supported by the European Research Council, ERC StG 2009 “GeCoMethods”, contract number 239748, by the ANR “GCM”, program “Blanc–CSD” project number NT09-504490, and by the DIGITEO project “CONGEO”.

Almost Linear Actions by Finite Groups on S

A free action of a finite group on an odd-dimensional sphere is said to be almost linear if the action restricted to each cyclic or 2– hyperelementary subgroup is conjugate to a free linear action. We begin this survey paper by reviewing the status of almost linear actions on the 3–sphere. We then discuss almost linear actions on higher-dimensional spheres, paying special attention to the group...

Two-dimensional almost-Riemannian structures are generalized Riemannian structures on surfaces for which a local orthonormal frame is given by a Lie bracket generating pair of vector fields that can become collinear. We study the relation between the topological invariants of an almost-Riemannian structure on a compact oriented surface and the rank-two vector bundle over the surface which defin...

Umbilicity of (Space-Like) Submanifolds of Pseudo-Riemannian Space Forms

We study umbilic (space-like) submanifolds of pseudo-Riemannian space forms, then define totally semi-umbilic space-like submanifold of pseudo Euclidean space and relate this notion to umbilicity. Finally we give characterization of total semi-umbilicity for space-like submanifolds contained in pseudo sphere or pseudo hyperbolic space or the light cone.A pseudo-Riemannian submanifold M in (a...

Sub-Riemannian structures on 3D Lie groups

We give a complete classification of left-invariant sub-Riemannian structures on three dimensional Lie groups in terms of the basic differential invariants. As a corollary we explicitly find a sub-Riemannian isometry between the nonisomorphic Lie groups SL(2) and A(R)× S, where A(R) denotes the group of orientation preserving affine maps on the real line.

A Calculus for Differential Invariants of Parabolic Geometries

The Wünsch’s calculus for conformal Riemannian invariants is reformulated and essentially generalized to all parabolic geometries. Our approach is based on the canonical Cartan connections and the Weyl connections underlying all such geometries. The differential invariants for various geometric structures are the core ingredients for numerous applications both in geometry and geometric analysis...
